If you have leftovers, reheat them in the oven to get them nice and crispy again. I had a small percentage of the tots break, so be gentle when transferring them to your serving dish.

Ingredients

  • 50 - 55 tater tots thawed to room temperature
  • 1-16- ounce package Bacon strips cut in 4 pieces
  • 2/3 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Chili Powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with foil and place a cooling rack on top of the pan. This will allow the bacon to crisp on all sides.

  • Cut each bacon strip into 4 pieces. Cut the bacon in half and then cut each half in half again.

  • Wrap each thawed tater tot in bacon and then roll it in the brown sugar mixture. Place on top of the cookie rack.

  • Bake about 10 to 15 minutes at 375, then increase the oven to 400 and let them cook another 5 minutes. Check to see if they are crisping up. You may need to leave them in 5 minutes longer. Check frequently at this point so they don't burn. Serve warm.

Any tips to make the tater tot crunchier without burning the bacon?

If you wanted really crunchy tots, I imagine you could bake them before adding the bacon. I don’t have a time for you since I’ve never made it this way. The nature of this recipe is that the tots don’t get crazy crunchy, so pre-baking them to get them crisp first might work for this. If you try it please let me know how it works.

Also, I had leftovers so the next day I reheated them in the oven. Put foil over the top and rebake for a few minutes, checking to see how they are doing every few minutes. They were extra crunchy this way. Adding the foil was key to making sure the bacon didn’t burn.

If you have already made the tots at this point, you could try simple baking them longer, with foil over the top. If they are on the verge of burning, bump the heat down just a bit to be safe.

I made these tonight and they are truly good. I did find that quite a few of the tots tended to fall apart when picking them up for eating. I need to try and wrap the WHOLE tot next time to avoid this. I will make them again.

Why are my homemade tater tots falling apart? ›

The patties made from fresh potatoes are a bit hard to hold together. NOTE: it is very important to let the tots fry long enough on the first side before turning them, as turning them too soon will result in their falling apart. Mine took roughly 6-7 minutes per side to turn golden brown.
