What is Frangelico Liqueur and What Does it Taste Like?

Frangelico is an Italian liqueur made of hazelnuts.

Therefore, it features a very distinct hazelnut flavor profile with vanilla and floral hints.

Frangelico’s origins date back more than 300 years.

And its name is an homage to the legend of Fra’ Angelico, a hermit monk that lived in the Piedmont region in the North of Italy.

Which is why the bottle has the shape of a monk silhouette.

Apparently, Northern Italian monks were not only famous for their austere life and dedication to their faith but also for being great connoisseurs in fine foods and drinks.

Frangelico can be drunk on its own on the rocks or used in co*cktails like this particular Chocolate Cake Shot recipe.

It is also a very nice secret ingredient to have on hand to add to coffee and cakes for a nice hazelnut touch, especially to a fluffy chocolate cake, chai spice cake or tiramisu crepe cake.

How to Correctly Drink the Chocolate Cake Shot

When drinking this shot it is crucial that you bite into the sugar-coated lemon wedge and keep the juices inside your mouth.

And then, drink the shot.

Don’t omit the lemon wedge.

You need the lemon juice for the shot to taste like a bite of chocolate cake.

Without this component, it will not taste like a cake.

It will actually taste simply like drinking hazelnut.

Some people first drink the shot, then suck on the lemon, which is typical for most shots.

But we found that for the Chocolate Cake Shot, the juice mixes in your mouth better when you take the lemon wedge first.

Recipe Notes and Tips

Can you use vanilla vodka?

Some recipes call for vanilla vodka instead of plain regular vodka.

You can use either.

We have tried both and prefer the plain regular vodka version so that it does not overpower the Frangelico.

Plus, the shot is incredibly sweet already due to the Frangelico liqueur.

Do you need a co*cktail shaker?

The Chocolate Shot Cake can be served un-chilled.

If this is the case, then no, you do not need a co*cktail shaker.

Simply pour the ingredients in a shot glass and mix.

What if I want a sweeter profile?

If you want an extra sweet shot, rim the glass with sugar and use lemon juice instead of water for the sugar to stick.
